Conclave Transportation and Weekend Info

April 20-22, 2012. For Sapona Chapter people, or those needing a ride from the Elkin-Yadkin Area. We will meet in two locations: 4:00 Elkin Walmart (departs at 4:30); 5:00 at Pizza Hut Yadkinville (departs at 5:15). This is tent camping, so please remember to bring your tent, a sleeping bag, toiletries. Meals are provided, but extra spending money is always good. The camp is in Yanceyville, NC. Contact Ernie Holcomb or Zach Brown for more details. We may stop of lunch on Sunday, depending on our departure time, so a few extra dollars will come in handy for this.

Conclave Registration hits 22 for Sapona!

More details will be posted here on transportation for those who register for Conclave. The deadline for forms is now 3-31-12, we have a goal of 28 total people from Sapona.

Scouting for Food a HUGE success

We had many people make it out for the Scouting for Food drive this year.

Four attend Carolina's Indian Seminar

Zach, Buddy, Levi and Travis went down to the CIS in Statesville on January 22. The evening was a fun and educational time which begain and ended with stops for food. Additional information about dance or singing can be had by talking to any one of these guys. Next year we should have a whole bunch of people try to make it for this event and even for the classes that teach you about how to dance, sing and make your outfits. Further, Wahissa was well represented with many dancers and singers. The drum team was given an exclusive review session with older, experienced singers who offered advise and critique. The dancers were able to see new ideas, learn additional dance moves and stay on top of the new things going on in dancing today. The next opportunity to dance and sing will be coming up at the Food Bank Pow Wow to be held the second Saturday in February in the evening after the Scouting for Food drive is over. If you want to go, see Zach Brown and Ernie Holcomb for more details.

Two new officers elected!

Congratulations to Corey Gilliam, Vice Chief of Finanace and Dakota Spicer, Vice Chief of Indian Affairs. These two people's roles take effect immediately, if not sooner!

Officers Meeting, Chicken Stew for all, Drum construction plans!

On Friday, December 30 at 3PM the Sapona Officer team will meet to discuss plans for the coming year and work out details for chapter goals. The address is 9355 Greenhorn Road, Elkin, NC 28621 at the home of Travis Gentry. The house number is 336-835-8110 or cell 336-816-8110. This is not a uniformed event, so please dress casual, bring a pen and paper and a 2012 calendar. This is a fun session where lots of plans will be made.

There will be a huge chicken stew starting about 5 PM and the whole lodge, camp staff and Scouting community is invited to attend for the meal. If folks want to bring something for this meal, bring a drink or a dessert dish. We normally drum and sing at this party and have a spoons battle. See more details on facebook about the spoons game. It is a great time to see old frinds and make new ones.

On Saturday, January 31 from 9AM to 5 PM at Travis' house the lodge will attempt to make two lodge drums, both will be available for chapter use when they are dry and ready. All manpower and efforts are welcomed for this huge undertaking. Putting the head on a drum is messy so wear clothes you don't mind getting messed up, wet and stinky.

Folks who want to stay overnight may do so by making plans with Travis. You will need a sleeping bag and a mattress or cot. His house in not a full service hotel, so plan to claim a spot of floor for the night. It will be a good time!

Sapona wins Honor Chapter back-to-back!

At the recent lodge banquet in November Sapona Chapter again wins the coveted Honor Chapter Award. They also earned the Fall Fellowship Spirit Award. Many great things happened this year and the officer team is to be congraulated for it's efforts to keep Sapona on top.

Order of the Arrow Legend Sash Strips

Now on sale at the Sapona Store are the classic white and red sash strips with the Order of the Arrow Legend embroidered. Sewn onto the sash these are a really cool addition to your uniform. The strips will sell on a first come, first sold basis. Come to the chapter campsite for the latest items in the Sapona Store. (These sold out in under an hour!)

Fall Fellowship TOGA!

Sapona leaders announce the 2011 chapter theme of TOGA. All members are reminded to wear their TOGA during the weekend and support the chapter! A new edition of the Raft, the official Sapona Chapter Newsletter will tell all the details about the fellowship. Keep a watch on your mailbox for this exciting news.

Special Thanks

On the weekend of Ordeal 2, Buddy Flay, Levi Barker and Zach Brown made an outstanding effort to the service of our chapter. They presented themselves as an Elangomat to the Ordeal for the weekend. The effort they showed made it clear that their service was not just to be an officer of the chapter, but to truely serve the brothers of Wahissa Lodge #118. It is efforts such as this that keep the spirit of the Order alive.

Lodge Building Facelift

If you want to see an amazing transformation at Camp Raven Knob. Just hike up to the top of the lodge trail and you'll see a neat work in progress. New boards, metal roofing and a full back porch has been installed to our lodge building. The inside is on the road to recovery also. New interior doors, a new facelift to the kitchen and the list goes on. Our chapter has had a planner involved since the project began and he has spent many extra hours and weekends at camp to make this a success. Hats off to Ernie Holcomb for all his work. There are also many other hard workers how have made this project a success.

Scouting for Food Goes Gangbusters

This years 2011 Scouting for Food effort was truly a great effort for the local food pantries and food agencies. The combined efforts of the packs, troops and crews in the Laurel District have produced more than 6500 lbs of food for needy families. Special thanks to the hard working OA members who helped out by unloading, weighing and sorting the food at the many collection locations. Those people include: Tim Pettyjohn, Luke Pettyjohn, Buddy Flay, Ernie Holcomb, Randy Kirby, Ethan Collins, John Dean Byrd, (A complete list will be posted in the coming weeks).

Gotta Get that Brotherhood

It's the step you take yourself. Brotherhood involves seaming one's membership. It is vital to continue in the Order beyond your Ordeal experience. Often times arrowmen stop after the Ordeal thinking that this is ALL there is. Hard work and nothing more. Well, how wrong they are. However it is really up to us to help show them the way to Brotherhood membership. Here is a help sheet that may help you in this quest: Brotherhood Questions 2010.docx

2011 Officers

Congratulations to: Wesley Church, Chapter Chief; Buddy Flay, VCA; Jonathan Marion, VCECP; Andrew Cox, VCPublications and Administration & Andrew Austin, VCIA. The adult advisers: Ernie Holcomb, Chapter Adviser; Travis Gentry, Associate Chapter Adviser.

Sapona means the great river and was the original name of the Yadkin River that flows through most of our chapter area.

The local Indians who lived in the area were known as the Sapona Tribe.
